Spring is in the Air – 40 Hanger Challenge

I thought when I started the 40 Hanger Challenge it would be done and over it by now. Somehow, I have this idea to keep going longer. Now it is Spring in AZ, mostly 80’s but have seen a few high 90’s already. Which means the February 40 hanger pieces no longer work.

Here’s what I’ll be focusing on to freshen my 40 hangers:

  • Pops of color (Purple of course, pinks, blues)
  • White capri’s, jeans,
  • Shorts – dressy and casual
  • Classy sleeveless

I already have most of these items in my boxes and will need to find them.

I will also be looking for cute up-to-date sandals and peep toe shoes.

What are you looking to add to your wardrobe this Spring?

Living the 40 Hanger Challenge

I have been living the 40 Hanger Challenge since February 1st and it was suppose to end on February 28th. I felt it needed a little more time. Not totally sure how I feel about this but I am doing it anyway.

Here’s what I’ve discovered. Some of the pieces I thought I would wear a lot never came out of the closet. I have been replacing those items with ones I want to wear. Weather in the Phoenix (AZ) metro area in February is wacky. Trying to predict what the best items for this was and is hard. Although March/April will stay in the 80’s mostly. It is also hard to get me photographed before I am running out the door or changing in to “mommy clothes”. You know the “mommy clothes”, the ones a mom wears when making dinner, cleaning, doing bathes and taking care of sick kids.

Here’s some photos of what I have put together.

I am continuing this challenge into April. Wish me luck. Transitioning the closet to spring is the next step. I’ll take a group shot of the current 40 before I move things out.

Are you about to pull out your spring wardrobe?

Empty Shelf Challenge – March

I knew this challenge would be hard. I started with a bang and have been dragging the last month or so. BUT, I am still moving forward, inching maybe but moving forward. Here’s the latest I’ve finished.

The Blessed LIfe was a little harder for me to get through not because it’s a hard read but it worked on my heart along the way so I took my time in taking it all in.

The Blessed Life

And because I am a mom and read about 20-30 minutes each kid I will include all these Junie B. Jones books C boy and I have been reading since the new year. These books crack us up.

Junie B. Jones

I’m looking forward to the next book I’ve decided to re-read. I think it will help me keep on task.

The Fashion Focus Continues – 40 Hanger Challenge

I am amazed at the hours it is taking me to go through my closet. If you decide to attempt this challenge be aware it will take you several days if you have a stuffed full closet. Over the long weekend I think I  gave it 5 + hours. This did include multiple interruption from my silly boys. AND I am still NOT done.

Working on making it happen.

Working on making it happen.

I have filled 4 containers of various sizes of 1) the clothes I want to keep after the challenge, 2) ones that don’t fit right now, and 3) seasonal items. There is also two large shopping bags FULL ready for the next “Switch & Ditch“. I should count the actual number leaving my closet forever. (Side note, I never did get a full count but I am still pulling clothes out)

So much stuff!

So much stuff! Just 2 of the bins I filled.

Lastly, I am really working the mix and match angle I love so much. Really figuring out which pieces I truly enjoy wearing and the maximum number of looks I can get out of them.  I really want all my outfits to represent me and not just an “easy way out”.

Here are the bags that left forever… oh! and a box of 10 pairs of shoes.

Good bye, forever.

Good bye, forever.

Have you taken an assessment of your closet? How is that going?

The Closet of a Fashionista – 40 Hanger Challenge

I’d like to share that I fully intended to have this challenge in place and “working it” January 1st. I didn’t, however, take into account… Christmas and all the fun activities that we do during that time. ugh…

Now my goal is to have everything in place February first and begin posting an outfit a day on my Facebook page and a weekly review here. What is the 40 Hanger Challenge? Several months ago I came across a blogger who did this for her closet. She cleared out her closet and only kept 40 hanging items. She did this for a year. If something came in another item had to leave. Made her really think about what her fashion personality and needs were. It has been mulling around in my head all this time.  Could I really do that? Do I even WANT to do that. Then I thought about a few of my clients. While I am a clothes horse my clients who truly just want a few key pieces need to KNOW I really can achieve that for them.

At this time I am not planning on staying with just 40 for more that just the month. I do plan on downsizing as the shear number is just silly and truly I want pieces I love, of quality and I fit into. My husband was happy to hear this, as it seems I have taken over some closet area that was suppose to be his 14 years ago. oops…

In the mean time… here is where I am at:

  • Counted the number of hanging clothes I actually have in my closet. (over 300 OMGosh!) No this doesn’t count what’s in my dresser.
  • Found 40 PURPLE hangers to use.
  • Purchased a container to store the clothing not being used in the challenge and started filling it. I have purged a few items along the way. (yea, me!)

What does 40 purple hangers look like?

40 Purple hangers and the space hubby wants back.

40 Purple hangers and the space hubby wants back.

Now to decipher the ratios of pants, tops, jackets, etc… February in Arizona can range from 40* to 80*. I am also contemplating how I want to apply this concept to shoes and accessories, eeek.

Lots to think about. Stay tuned.

Progress – Empty Shelf Challenge

I am excited to share that I have been able to read a couple more books.

My big boy and I have been enjoying the Dragonbreath series and had finished every last one last year. For Christmas daddy found the most current book in the series. C boy wouldn’t let me put it on my empty shelf. He doesn’t think it counts, but I read every word. 🙂 If you have a 1st/2nd grade boy in your life I would bet they’d enjoy this series.

My son doesn't think this should count. But I read every page of it.

This book was a Birthday gift from a sweet friend. On relationship marketing. I really enjoyed it and hope to implement some of the ideas soon. Another easy read in story form.

Birthday Gift

The book I am currently reading is really good and is challenging me to thinking about what it means to bless others. Not going as quickly as I find myself really thinking about what I am reading. That’s a good thing.

Have you gotten any further on your reading?

Happy New Year!

Goodbye 2013!  Hello 2014!

I don’t know about you but last year was a challenge. I had big plans and feel like I fell short on all of them. One of those being this blog. I like to share my thoughts with you but it was difficult to truly find the time among all the craziness of my life.

So, I shall start again. Make my plans and see what happens. I hope you’ll join me on this journey of faith, fashion and family.

I’d like to share one goal with you for now. I have decided to accept Jon Acuff’s #empytshelf challenge for 2014. I emptied a shelf and have started reading at least 10 pages a day. Now this is a BIG DEAL as reading with 2 boys running about is not, shall I say, easy. So here is my shelf.

The start of a New Year.

The start of a New Year.

This is the first book to go on my shelf.  Yep, I already read one book!! Woot! And I highly recommend this one. It is a fast read and great teaching on relationship marketing.

Other Goals:

  • 40 Hanger Challenge – More on this later as I am going to blog my way throughout the challenge from start to finish.
  • Couch to 5K – I am not sure how I really feel about this one as I have always said if I am running you know someone/thing is chasing me. With that said the concept keeps stirring in my heart so I thought let’s see what happens.

Would you like to join me on one of these goals?  What are you reading?

Fashion & Me – Photo a Day June

Here’s some fashion goings on from the month of June.

6. Hat  I have an amazing hat collection. I collect hats. I have over 50. Several are vintage from the early 1900’s. One is vintage from Paris. (Brought that one home from honeymoon) I use to wear them all the time, but, with two small people in my life they have made it a little harder for me to feel comfortable in wearing them right now. Maybe after my youngest gets older, in school, I’ll start again.

Hat(s)

15. Yellow  I wore these fabulous yellow snake skin heels with a fantastic Karen Kane LBD. I would show you the whole outfit but I am still feeling challenged with my self photos of what I am wearing. I just need to have my hubby take them.  I do have to laugh as when I originally posted this pick several people thought it was a real snake. Silly friends.

Yellow – Accessories (Shoes)

18. Something we don’t know about you.   I played the violin from the 4th grade on through high school. I even made it to the Mesa Youth Orchestra. I have’t picked it up in years. I still have it and am inspired when I hear violins being played.

Something you don’t know about me – I played the violin.

19. Imperfect me…

Imperfect – Me

24. On your mind  Having had a migraine, so on my mind is making it go away. I have a feeling my previous photo is one of me having a migraine too. I wish they would just go away! I pulled out my BeautiControl goodies: spa neck wrap, Luxeries of the Sea cooling gel, Spa Detox Mist, Spa Nourishing Eye pads. Aaaahhhh….

On my mind – spa remedy for my head.

26. Where you shop  I shop lots of different places when I have time. “Tar jay” seems to be our go to these days. I think we need to invest in stock in them. 🙂

Where you shop – Target

Do you wear hats? Where do you shop?

Fashion – AZ Assist Switch & Ditch

I had the privilege to put on a Switch & Ditch fundraiser for AZ Assist a local (Arizona) nonprofit that assists young adults with autism and their families. It is impressive what they have been able to do for there clients with the little recognition they’ve received.

It was the largest Switch & Ditch to date. The ladies had a great time and were able to learn more about AZ Assist. I am still taken back on the amount of clothing that ends up being left over after all is said and done. It was all donated to Fresh Start Treasures. I love the win – win – win – win concept. 🙂 I think they are starting to get to know me over there as I have dropped off lots of goodies over the last year.

Here is a peak into the fun we had at Switch & Ditch…

Oh AND this is also a “photo a day” 2. Empty – Not. It looks like a store.

June Photo a Day 1 – National Doughnut Day

What fun! National Doughnut Day. Who doesn’t like doughnuts, especially FREE ones. I didn’t eat any since I am still on my no sweets commitment… life change… thing. I took my mom and the boys over to our FAVORITE doughnut shop, Krispy Kreme. I have loved this place since I was a kid and my dad use to take my brother and I once a week after we dropped my mom at work. Good memories. Anyway, you can see them making the doughnuts through a window and the kids love it. (OK me too.)

1. Morning  At National Doughnut Day. We had to wait in this crazy line, since everyone was there for a free doughnut.

Morning – waiting in line and saw a Vintage sign on the wall

We of course didn’t just get our free doughnut we had to get a dozen…

The boys enjoying the “Morning”

Did you partake in National Doughnut day?
